56ers Win Third Midwest Championship
MADISON, WI – July 19, 2010
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) closed-out the 2010 season on Sunday, July 18 and confirmed the four regional champions that will represent their regions at the Sixth Annual NPSL Final Four National Championship in Madison, AL starting Thursday, July 29. The semi-finals will be played on Thursday, July 29. The first semi-final will be at 5:30 PM between the East Region Champions, FC Sonic (Lehigh, PA),record of 10-1-1, and the West Region Champions, Sacramento Gold (CA), record of 7-1-2. The second semi-final will be at 8:00 PM between the South Region Champion, Chattanooga FC (TN), record of 6-2-0, and the Midwest Region Champion, Madison 56ers NPSL (WI), record of 8-0-2. All games will be played at the City School Stadium in Madison, Alabama. The championship game with be played on Saturday, July 31 at 7:30 PM, with a third place game at 5:30 PM on Friday, July 30, both at City School Stadium.
Two of the four 2010 NPSL finalists are returnees to the NPSL National Championships. For the Midwest Region Champions, Madison 56ers, this will be their third trip to the championship finals in the NPSL’s six year history. The Madison 56ers were also Midwest Champions in 2006 and 2007 and participated in both those finals, including being the host team in 2006. They also hosted the 2009 NPSL National Championships in Madison, WI; the only two time NPSL championship host organization. The 2010 East Region Champions, FC Sonic, won the 2008 NPSL National Championship in Long Island, NY, but were known as the Pennsylvania Stoners, at that time. FC Sonic beat the New York Red Bulls U23, 3 to 2 in the East Region championship game.
The remaining two NPSL finalists are first timers to the NPSL National Championships. The West Region Champions, the Sacramento Gold, are in their augural season in the NPSL. But the Sacramento area has already had one NPSL Champion in the Sacramento Knights, who defeated the Madison 56ers for the NPSL Championship in 2006. The South Region Champion, Chattanooga FC, are in their second year in the NPSL having tied for second place in 2009. Chattanooga is the only finalist with an unbeaten league record of 6 wins. 2 ties, and no losses.
